PCB assembly: surface mount (SMT)
Surface mount technology (SMT)
SMT component is the most common type in modern electronic products. Compared with similar PTH products, they are smaller, cheaper and easier to assemble. They are assembled at a very high speed using a pick-up and place machine and welded using a reflux furnace. This makes them ideal for mass production, but manual assembly is much more difficult. Manual welding of SMT components requires more practice than PTH and sometimes more equipment, such as reflux furnace or hot air repair station.
It is usually smaller and cheaper than PTH components.
Easy mass assembly through production equipment.
Due to increased demand, more parts are available.
It is usually difficult to assemble by hand.
Connections that require strength, such as connectors, may be weaker.
The solder joint is easy to crack and degrade due to its small size.
When should SMT components be used?
If your design must be small.
If you need a chip that is not in the PTH package.
If you want to mass produce your design.
